Indian Law Institute Common Admission Test (ILI CAT) is conducted by Indian Law Institute, New Delhi for admission to its LLM program. The institute was established in 1956 and was inaugurated by the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the presence of then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. The institute was given status of deemed university by University Grants Commission in 2004. It provides post graduate and research programs in the field of law like LLM, Diploma programs and PhD.
ILI conducts CAT for admission to its various programs including 2 year LLM program. Indian Law Institute is a premium institute for law education in thye country. It has the chief justice of India as its ex-officio president and other high dignitaires in the field of law holding very important posts. Alumni from the university has gone on to hold the highest positions in the Supreme Court as well as High Courts in the country.

Bulletin of Information/Prospectus containing Application Form (Price Rs. 250/-) can be purchased from the Institute on all working days between 10.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. Bulletin of information can also be obtained by POST from the Institute on payment of Rs. 310/- in the form of demand draft drawn in favour of 'Indian Law Institute' payable at New Delhi alongwith a self addressed envelop of 24 X 30 cms. size. Application Form can also be downloaded from the ILI website www.ili.ac.in.

Eligibility: LL.B. Degree (with not less than 50% marks) recognized by Bar Council of India as eligible for enrolment as an advocate in India.

A Law Degree from a foreign country with at least 50% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade.
The candidates appearing in the qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply but their admission will be subject to production of proof of having acquired minimum prescribed qualification, at the time of admission. If the result of the qualifying examination is not declared till the date of admission, his/her admission shall be provisional. Such candidate shall give an undertaking that he/she is taking the provisional admission at his/her risk and that he/she shall submit the result of qualifying examination on or before 30.09.2011. In case the candidate fails to submit his/her final result of qualifying examination to prove his/her eligibility on or before 30.09.2011 for any reason whatsoever, his/her admission shall be treated as cancelled and the entire fee forfeited.
Duration, Continuation and Termination of the LL.M. Course: The duration of the course is 2 years comprising of 4 semesters. However the students have an option to complete the course within one and a half years under special circumstances with the prior approval of the Academic Programme Committee. In such a case, the student has to produce publishable research papers & dissertation before he/she could be granted the leave to finish the entire course in 1½ years. Students would be graded out of the maximum 1500 marks as per teaching scheme. The following guidelines have been prescribed by the Institute for the students to exercise the option of completing the LL.M. Course within one and a half years:– (i) 'Special Circumstances’ means a student who has an exceptional academic record, securing at least 65% marks in the aggregate in the first two semesters, with over 60% marks in each paper, and having passed all the papers in the first attempt. In addition the student must have secured 80% attendance in each of the first two semesters, (ii) A student whose research papers have been published or accepted for publication in a reputed journal/ publication, and (iii) A student who has secured over 70% marks in at least two out of three research papers submitted in the first two semesters. A student opting for early completion of the LL.M. Course must also submit a synopsis, which in the opinion of the Academic Programmes Committee is very good. Students who fulfil all the above criteria may be permitted to submit their dissertation early, but not later than December 31st of the third semester of the year on the recommendation of the Academic Programme Committee.
Admission Procedure:
Candidates are first shortlisted on the basis of their ILI CAT performance. The shortlisted candidates are then called for viva voce after which final selections are made.
Examination Pattern:
Before appearing for the exam, the candidates must have knowledge about the examination pattern of Indian Law Institute Common Admission Test. The entrance test is divided into 3 parts, which are given in following lines.
Part I: Part one of the entrance test carries only multiple-choice type questions. Each question contains four answers in which the student has to find out the correct one. The questions in this part are generally asked from the subjects of English and General Knowledge. ¼ mark is deducted for each wrong answer.
Part II: The second part of the question paper also consists of objective-type questions. The candidates have to answer the correct option out of given four options. The questions are generally based on the law subjects including jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, IPC, Commercial Laws (Contract, Partnership and Sale of Goods Act) and Family Law. There is a provision of negative marking in this part, that is, one fourth mark is deducted for each wrong answer.
Part III: The third part of the entrance test consists of subjective type questions, which are asked from the law stream. The candidates are required to answer in not more than 150 words. The questions are asked from the subjects of jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, IPC, Commercial Laws (Contract, Partnership and Sale of Goods Act) and Family Law.
Viva-Voce: The candidates who have successfully passed the ILI CAT Exam are short listed to appear for Viva-Voce. It is conducted at the campus of the Indian Law Institute. For final selection, merit list is prepared on the basis of the marks of the candidates in both written test and viva-voce.
