Admission Notification for Full-Time MCA Programme 2012

Admission to MCA Programme 2012 - 2015

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to the 3-year (6-semester) full-time MCA programme 2012 at Mesra, and our Extension Centres at Allahabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lalpur and Noida.

The last date for apply online for MCA Programme 2012 has been extended up to 17th April 2012 and last date for receipt of printouts of duly completed online forms up to 20th April 2012, owing to several requests from the candidates.

Important Dates: (Revised)

i. Filling of online form commences from 9 am on: 1 March 2012
ii. Filling of online form closes at 7 pm on: 17 April 2012
iii. Last date for receipt of printouts of duly completed online forms + Institute copy of Challan slip issued by the Bank: 20 April 2012
iv. ONLINE ENTRANCE TEST FOR MCA 2012: 19 & 20 May 2012
v. Counselling schedules to be displayed by: 1 June 2012
vi. Tentative dates of counselling: 13 to 14 June 2012
vii. Date of Admission: From 15 June 2012 onwards
viii. Classes will commence from 16 July 2012 at all Centres

Candidates in their own interest should send their completed application forms by appropriate means well in advance of the due date (preferably by means of which e-tracking is possible). Applications reaching us after the due date are liable to be rejected / may not be processed.

Candidates may deposit application fee in SBI or ICICI bank branches through printed e-Challan [printable while filling online form] for filling the online form (this application fee is non-refundable).

Note: Payment by cash at ICICI Bank – there is no extra bank service charge

Payment by cash at SBI Bank - Bank service charge is extra (Rs. 20/-).

The Online Entrance Test for MCA 2012:

The MCA 2012 Online Entrance Test will be held on 19 and 20 May 2012 at various Test Centres as follows: Allahabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Noida, and Ranchi.

Depending on the number of candidates at a given Test Centre, the Test may be held upto three time slots at the Centre, for example, from 9.00 to 11.00 am, 12.00 to 2.00 pm, and 3.00 to 5.00 pm.

Admit Cards: Admit cards will be sent by e-mail / post to all eligible candidates whose properly completed application forms have been received within the stipulated time at the office of the Dean, Admission & Academic Coordination, BIT Mesra. Candidates will be allotted a Test Centre, date and time slot for the Test, as above. The Institute will try to allot the Test Centre and date as per candidates’ preference as far as possible. However, the Institute reserves the right to shift candidates to an alternative Test Centre / date, based on the number of candidates for a given Test Centre / Test Centre capacity.

The admit cards may also be downloaded from our website after 5 May 2012. If a candidate is unable to download the admit card, and the hard copy of the same is also not received upto a week before the Test, candidates may contact the Admissions Office at BIT Mesra by telephone or fax.

The Institute will not be responsible for any postal delay or irregularity resulting in nonreceipt / late receipt of the admit card.

The admit card is not transferable to any other person. Impersonation is a punishable offence under law. No applicant will be allowed to appear for the Test without a valid admit card. The admit card will be required to be produced at the time of counselling also. Therefore, all candidates are required to preserve the admit card until the admission process is complete.

Eligibility Criteria for the full-time MCA Programme 2012:

1) Candidates must have passed with minimum 60% (45% for SC/ST) marks in average of all subjects in Class 10.

2) Candidates must have passed with minimum 60% (45% for SC/ST) marks (average of 4 core subjects) in Class 12 / QE (Equivalent Qualifying Examination). Percentage of marks in Class 12 to be computed as average of English, Mathematics (excluding Business Mathematics) and best 2 other core subjects.

3) Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India / AIU. This degree must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling [Class 12 or equivalent] (10+2+3 system).

4) Candidates must have one of following qualifications:

a) Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), or
b) B.Sc. in Computer Science / Information Technology / Electronics, or
c) B.Sc. with Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects at graduate level.

5) Candidates of B.Sc. Honours must have minimum 60% (45% for SC/ST) marks in average in their Honours subject. Candidates of BCA and other graduate courses must have minimum 60% (45% for SC/ST) marks in average in graduation, marks to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared.

6) Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s programme in 2012 can also apply, and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the counselling they must bring a certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute stating that by 30 June 2012, they will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their Bachelor’s degree.

Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the Bachelor's degree / equivalent qualification with requisite marks as per item (5) above. They must submit proof of passing their final examinations with requisite marks by 31 October 2012. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

7) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if

(a) the programmes are recognized by the DEC-IGNOU,
(b) they have passed the qualifying examination at the time of applying, with minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) calculated as per item (5) above. They must enclose photocopies of pass certificate and marksheets of qualifying examination with their application.

Notes:

(1) Candidates with foreign diplomas should see the EdCIL website for equivalence (http://www.edcil.co.in), and if required should obtain an equivalence certificate from the evaluation division of the AIU (website http://www.aiuweb.org).

(2) In case any Board / University awards grades instead of marks, the calculation of equivalent marks would be based on the procedure prescribed by the Board / University. In case a University does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing obtained CGPA with the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the resultant with 100.

(3) At any level of the studies [class X, class XII or graduation], a candidate / applicant must have passed all the required subjects at that level from the same Board/ University.

How to Apply:

The MCA Information Brochure 2012 - covers admissions to the 3-year (6-semester) full-time MCA programme 2012 offered at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, and its Extension Centres at Allahabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lalpur and Noida. The programme will commence in July 2012.

Provisional selections for the MCA 2012 programme will be based on:

The performance of a candidate in the MCA 2012 Online Entrance Test, provided he/she meets the minimum eligibility criteria given in our advertisement / notification(s) on our website (please see - Sec 5)

1. To apply for the MCA programme 2012, eligible candidates must complete and submit the online application form on our website and:

Download the Bank Challan Form (SBI/ICICI) from our website to deposit the application fee for Rs.2,000/- (Rs.1,200/- for SC/ST) in favour of “Birla Institute of Technology” in a SBI / ICICI bank and enter the Challan number and other required details of the payment as issued by the bank within the given time period. (Note: Fee once remitted shall not be refunded under any circumstances)

Send a printout of the completed form along with

i. two recent colour photographs (one pasted on the form and one attached by clip to the form)
ii. photocopies of all marksheets and certificates (see List of Enclosures)
iii. institute copy of Challan slip issued by the Bank (SBI/ICICI)
iv. in a stout A4 size envelope by Speedpost / reliable courier (means by which sender may track its movement on internet) to the office of Dean, Admission & Academic Coordination, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi – 835215, to reach positively by the due date. Write “Application for MCA 2012 on top of the envelope”.

2. You can use the Online Application Form to apply for the MCA programme of the Institute at any 1 or any 2 or any 3 or any 4 or any 5 or all 6 choices of Place for Study (Centre), by clicking the appropriate check box against the names of the Centres. However, you must select ALL your choices before you submit the form online and print the same, so that all your choices will be saved in the database. Please do not make any corrections or add any Choices of Centre by hand on the printout of the form, as these will not be saved to the database.

3. Please do not print a blank form and fill it by hand as this will not be accepted.

4. Incomplete applications or applications received without all required enclosures are liable to be rejected / may not be processed.

5. Applications reaching us after the due date are liable to be rejected / may not be processed.

6. Candidates should keep photocopies of their completed forms for their own reference

Note: Candidates should proceed to fill the Online Application Form for admission to the MCA programme 2012, only after they satisfy themselves that they fulfill all the eligibility criteria

Counseling & Selection Procedures:

Expected Dates of Counselling:


Based on the choices given in their forms, the list of candidates for each Centre will be notified on our website and updated regularly. Each Centre will shortlist candidates for counselling on the basis of their performance in the MCA 2012 Online Entrance Test, provided they have applied for that Centre, and fulfill the eligibility criteria mentioned in the preceding pages and our advertisement / notification(s) on our website. Counselling schedules for each Centre, based on these scores, will tentatively be displayed by 1 June 2012 on the Institute website and Notice Boards at Mesra and concerned Extension Centres only. No separate intimation will be sent to candidates.

The counselling process will be held tentatively between 13 to 14 June 2012 at Allahabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mesra and Noida.

Candidates may appear for counselling at Allahabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mesra or Noida as per their choice indicated in their application form.

Selection Procedure:

The Institute will use an Online Entrance Test to shortlist candidates for the three-year full time MCA programme commencing in July 2012. Provisional selections for the MCA 2012 programme will be based on:

The performance of a candidate in the MCA 2012 Online Entrance Test, provided he/she meets the minimum eligibility criteria given in our advertisement / notification(s) on our website.

Each Centre will make its own lists of provisionally selected candidates and waitlisted candidates after the counselling. Provisional selection lists, along with procedures for admissions, will be notified the day after the counselling, on the Institute website http://www.bitmesra.ac.in and Notice Boards of the Institute / concerned Extension Centres only. No separate intimation will be sent to candidates. Provisionally selected candidates will be required to take admission by the dates given at any of the Centre by depositing fee and original certificates, failing which vacant seats may be allotted to waitlisted candidates. The list of waitlisted candidates will also be announced on the Institute website and Notice Boards of the Institute / concerned Extension Centres only. No separate intimation will be sent to candidates.

Please note that we may put up more than one notification on our website, to fill up vacancies, if any. Candidates should thus check our website http://www.bitmesra.ac.in regularly for any updates or matters related to the admission procedures. No separate intimation will be sent to candidates.

Notes:

a) Once a candidate is admitted at any of the Centres on the basis of “Home State Quota” he/she will not be eligible for upgradation in any of the other Centres at later stages in All India Quota.

b) Once the admission procedure is closed, there will be no transfer from one Centre to another in any condition.

Reservations:

Currently the Institute follows reservations as given below for its MCA programme.

1. For all programmes at the Institute which are supported by the State Govt., the reservation criteria for SC & ST are as per the norms of the State Govt.

2. For all other programmes the reservation criteria for SC & ST are as per the statutory norms of Central Govt. (SC -15% & ST - 7.5%)

3. The Institute observes statutory reservation for physically handicapped persons (3%).

4. Upto 1% of the seats may be allotted to sons and daughters of defence personnel who have lost their lives or been disabled in service, who otherwise have qualified for admissions.

5. Subject to eligibility and availability of candidates, 5% of the seats may be offered to candidates obtaining first degree of BIT during the year of admission desired.

6. Upto 5% of the seats at the Extension Centres are reserved for candidates who are sons and daughters of serving employees of BIT, who otherwise have qualified for admissions.

7. At all Centres* 50% of seats are reserved for the candidates who have passed / are appearing for their qualifying examination, from the State where the Centre is located. [In case sufficient numbers of suitable candidates from any group are not available, the Institute reserves the right to fill the seats from the other group].

However the final reservation proportion will depend on notification, if any, issued by competent authority and as accepted by the Institute.

*At all Centres 50% of the total seats are reserved for candidates who have passed / are appearing for their qualifying examination (graduation) from the state where Centre is located, taking it as one zone and the remaining 50% for candidates who have passed / are appearing for their qualifying examination (graduation) from other states of the country. (The “State of Eligibility” of a candidate for the purpose will be determined on the basis of location of his/her College where he/she has passed/is appearing for the qualifying examination / graduation)

Syllabus for the Online Entrance Test for MCA 2012:

The MCA 2012 Online Entrance Test shall comprise of 120 questions to be answered in 2 hours. Questions will be of objective type with multiple choices out of which only one is correct. A candidate must select only the correct answer to score full marks. For each correct answer a candidate will earn 4 marks. For every incorrect answer one mark will be deducted. If a question has not been attempted no credit will be given. The questions will be distributed into various areas as follows and the detailed syllabus is given below:

Section A: Mathematics (60 questions – objective type)

Algebra: Fundamental operations in Algebra, expansion, factorization, quadratic equations, indices, logarithms, arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progressions, binomial theorem, permutations and combinations, surds

Set Theory: Sets and subsets, operations on sets, sequences, properties of integers, relations and functions

Matrix Algebra: Elementary transformations, inverse of a matrix, rank, solution of simultaneous linear equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, quadratic forms

Co-ordinate Geometry: Rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates, equations of a line, mid point, intersections etc., equations of a circle, distance formulae, pair of straight lines, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola, simple geometric transformations such as translation, rotation, scaling.

Calculus: Limit of functions, continuous functions, differentiation of function(s), tangents and normals, simple examples of maxima and minima, integration of function by parts, by substitution and by partial fraction, definite integral application to volumes and surfaces of frustums of a sphere, cone, cylinder, Taylor Series.

Differential Equations: Differential equations of first order and their solutions, linear differential equations with constant coefficients, homogenous linear differential equations.

Vectors: Position vector, addition and subtraction of vectors, scalar and vector products and their applications to simple geometrical problems and mechanics.

Trigonometry: Simple identities, trigonometric equations, properties of triangles, solution of triangles, height and distance, inverse function

Probability and Statistics: Basic concepts of probability theory, averages, dependent and independent events, frequency distributions, and measures of dispersions, skewness and kurtosis, random variable and distribution functions, mathematical expectations, binomial, Poisson, normal distributions, curve fitting, and principle of least squares, correlation and regression

Linear Programming: Formulation of simple linear programming problems, basic concepts of graphical and simplex methods, revised simplex method, transportation and assignment problems, duality and integer programming

Section B: Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning: (20 questions – objective type)

Questions in this section will test logical reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and visio-spatial reasoning

Section C: Computer Awareness: (20 questions – objective type)

Computer Basics :Organization of a computer, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Structure of instructions in CPU, input / output devices, computer memory, memory organization, back-up devices

Data Representation: Representation of characters, integers, and fractions, binary and hexadecimal representations, Binary Arithmetic: Addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, 1’s and 2’s complement arithmetic, floating point representation of numbers, normalized floating point representation, Boolean algebra, truth tables, Venn diagrams

Computer Architecture: Block structure of computers, communication between processor and I / O devices, interrupts

Computer Language: Assembly language and high-level language, Multiprogramming and time-sharing operating systems, Computer Programming in C.
