Madras High Court Bench saves career of four Engineering Students
Madurai: The Madras High Court Bench here has saved the career of two male and two female engineering college students who lost required attendance in the process of helping one of the girl students get married with her lover and therefore prevented from writing their semester exams.
Allowing individual writ petitions filed by the four students through a common order, Justice V. Ramasubramanian directed Anna University of Technology - Tirunelveli to condone the lack of attendance in order to give an opportunity to the petitioners to correct their mistakes.
Stating that the petitioners had probably been fascinated by Tamil movies, the judge said: “It is true that the marriage of one of the students and the able assistance rendered by the co-students cannot form the basis for such a condonation. However, the fact that the petitioners hail from a poor background and that they are pursuing their courses of study after obtaining education loans is a factor to be taken note of.
“Further, considering the fact that all the petitioners had secured 75 to 89 per cent attendance in the seventh semester, the appropriate course of action would be to direct the university to condone the lack of attendance in respect of fifth and sixth semesters and declare the results of the examination taken by the petitioners during those semesters.
“Otherwise, the entire career of the petitioners may get spoiled.” The petitioners had appeared in person before the court along with their parents and expressed their regrets. After recording their presence, the judge made it clear that they should attend classes regularly in the future.
Of the four students, one had no arrears until the fifth semester and had also scored centum in one of the subjects. The rest of the three students including the girl who got married, after falling in love with her nephew, had arrears of 6 to 13 papers, according to details submitted by Latha Mathavan Engineering College at Alagarkovil near here. - The Hindu
