Supreme Court directs Central Government to hold a Single Common Entrance Test (CET) for all Medical Courses

7th Mar, 2011: The Supreme Court today directed the Central Government to hold a single eligibility-cum-entrance examination for MBBS and post-graduate medical courses in the country from this academic session.

A Bench of justices, Mr R.V. Raveendran, and Mr A.K. Patnaik, passed the order, saying that it will also be applicable for private medical colleges in the country.

The Bench asked the Government to hold the Single Common Entrance Test on a plea by Medical Council of India seeking to start a single eligibility-cum-entrance examination for MBBS and post-graduate Courses. Earlier, a panel set up by the health ministry to run the Medical Council of India (MCI) had suggested that a common entrance exam would lessen the stress of the student.
