CDS (I) 2014 Notification

A Combined Defence Services Examination will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission on 09th February, 2014 for admission to the undermentioned courses:-

Name of the Course and Approximate No. of Vacancies.

1. Indian Military Academy, Dehradun 136th Course commencing in January, 2014 [including 32 vacancies reserved for NCC ‘C’ Certificate (Army Wing) holders]. - 250

2. Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala-Course Commencing in January, 2014 Executive (Hydro/ General Service) (including 06 vacancies reserved for NCC 'C' Certificate holders (Naval Wing). - 40

3. Air Force Academy, Hyderabad (Pre-Flying) Training Course commencing in January, 2014 i.e. No.195th F(P) Course. - 32

4. Officers Training Academy, Chennai, 99th SSC Course (for Men) commencing in April, 2014. - 175

5. Officers Training Academy, Chennai 13th SSC Women (Non- Technical) Course commencing in April, 2014. - 12


1. CANDIDATES TO ENSURE THEIR ELIGIBILITY FOR THE EXAMINATION: The candidates applying for the examination should ensure that they fulfil all eligibility conditions for admission to the Examination. Their admission at all the stages of the examination will be purely provisional subject to satisfying the prescribed eligibility conditions.

Mere issue of Admission Certificate to the candidate will not imply that his/her candidature has been finally cleared by the Commission.

Verification of eligibility conditions with reference to original documents will be taken up only after the candidate has qualified for Interview/Personality Test.

2. How to Apply: Candidates are required to apply online only, by using the website www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed instructions are available on the abovementioned website. Brief instructions for filling up the Online Application Form have been given in the Appendix II.

3. LAST DATE FOR SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS: The Online Applications can be filled upto 02nd December, 2013 till 11.59 PM after which the link will be disabled.

4. The eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admission Certificate three weeks before the commencement of the examination. The e-Admission Certificate will be made available in the UPSC website [www.upsc.gov.in] for downloading by candidates. No Admission Certificate will be sent by post. All the applicants are required to provide valid & active e-mail i.d. while filling up Online application form as the commission may use electronic mode for contacting them.

5. PENALTY FOR WRONG ANSWERS: Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.

6. For both writing and marking answers in the OMR sheet [Answer Sheet], candidates must use black ball pen only. Pens with any other colours are prohibited. Do not use Pencil or Inkpen. Candidates should note that any omission/mistake/discrepancy in encoding/filling of details in the OMR answer sheet, especially with regard to Roll Number and Test Booklet Series Code, will render the answer sheet liable for rejection. Candidates are further advised to read carefully the "Special Instructions" contained in Appendix-III of the Notice.

7. FACILITATION COUNTER FOR GUIDANCE OF CANDIDATES: In case of any guidance/information/clarification regarding their applications, candidature etc. candidates can contact UPSC’s Facilitation Counter near Gate ‘C’ of its campus in person or over Telephone No.011-23385271/011-23381125/011-23098543 on working days between 10.00 hrs. and 17.00 hrs.


CDS (I) 2013 Exam Centres: The Examination will be held at the following Centres;

Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dharwar, Dispur (Guwahati), Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Jorhat, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkatta, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji (Goa), Patna, Port Blair, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati, Udaipur and Vishakhapatnam.

The centres as mentioned above are liable to be changed at the discretion of the Commission. Applicants should note that there will be a ceiling on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres except Chennai, Delhi, Dispur, Kolkatta and Nagpur. Allotment of Centres will be on the first-apply-first-allot basis and once the capacity of a particular centre is attained, the same will be frozen. Applicants, who cannot get a centre of their choice due to ceiling, will be required to choose a Centre from the remaining ones. Applicants are, thus, advised that they may apply early so that they could get a Centre of their choice.

Defence services are for those young and courageous individuals who nurture a patriotic sentiment and who have dedicated their lives to defending their country and its people. A candidate with the above sentiments can join the nation’s defence services after taking the Combined Defence Services Examination.

Combined Defence Services Examination is conducted by UPSC twice every year in the months of February and September for recruitment to officer cadre of the Army, Navy and Air force.

The finally selected candidates are sent to one of the following institutes for training:
(a) Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
(b) Naval Academy, Goa
(c) Air Force Academy, Begumpet, Hyderabad
(d) Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai

Candidates selected in the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy get permanent commission, however cadets passing out of Officers Training Academy get short service commission.

Candidates appearing in the degree or equivalent examination are also eligible to compete for the combined defence service but would be required to submit the proof of passing the requisite qualifying examination by the date specified in the Commission’s Notification for the Examination.

Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to the Regulations specified in the Commission’s Notification for Examination published in Employment News/Rozgar Samachar. For more details visit www.upsc.gov.in

Pattern of Examination: The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination having two stages;

Elementary Mathematics Elementary Mathematics Elementary Mathematics -

The standard of the paper in Elementary Mathematics will be of the Matriculation Standard. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be such as may be expected of a graduate of an Indian University.


1. English: The question paper will be designed to test the candidates' understanding of English and workman-like use of words.

2. General Knowledge: General Knowledge, including knowledge of current events and such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions of History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.

3. Elementary Mathematics:

Arithmetic: Number system, Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental Operations-addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, decimal fractions.

Unitary method: Time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.

Elementary Number Theory: Division algorithm, Prime and composite numbers, Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11, Multiples and factors, Factorization Theorem, H.C.F. and L.C.M.

Algebra: Basic operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M., Theory of Polynomials, Solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and coefficients (only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear in-equations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or in-equations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable and their solutions. Set language and set notation, Rational expressions and conditional identities, Laws of indices.

Trigonometry: Sine x, Cosine x, Tangent x when 0° < x< 90°. Values of sin x, cos x and tan x, for x = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°. Simple trigonometric identities. Use of trigonometric tables. Simple cases of heights and distances.

Geometry: Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures. Theorems on;
1. Properties of angles at a point
2. Parallel lines
3. Sides and angles of a triangle
4. Congruency of triangles
5. Similar triangles
6. Concurrence of medians and altitudes
7. Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square
8. Circle and its properties, including tangents and normals
9. Loci.

Mensuration: Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of figures, which can be split up into the figures (Field Book). Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders. Surface area and volume of spheres. Statistics-Collection and tabulation of statistical data. Graphical representation-frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts, etc. Measures of Central Tendency.

Intelligence and Personality Test: All the candidates Qualified in written examination are called for the Interview and put to Intelligence Tests (both verbal and non-verbal) which have been designed to assess the basic intelligence. They are also put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, and asked to give brief lectures on Specified Topics. All these tests are intended to Judge the mental caliber of a candidate. In broad terms, this is an Assessment of his Social Traits, Intellectual Qualities and Interests in Current Affairs.
